Transitional Bear - Silver Cloud

$34.00

It’s Makena and Kailani and we are excited to share our Transitional Bears -designed for children who travel between homes as a result of divorce.

We know the importance of transitional items or comfort items, because we were helped by them as children. One thing that eased our distress during transitions between our parents was a stuffed animal that we called, “Traveling Bear.” This was a comfort item that had been recommended by our play therapist.

Traveling Bear provided us with a sense of stability when we switched between houses. It helped us feel secure and comforted during difficult times. When we were little, life sometimes felt very unpredictable but with the tools we were given, we were able to navigate these things successfully.

Our goal is to provide the resources that helped us when we were younger - with the hope that these things will help your little ones. Don’t just take our word for it, there is research on this topic!

Each 15” bear comes with a white, eco-friendly, non-woven tote bag that measures 13.5” x 14.5.” (Please be aware that the bag handles could pose a safety risk for small children - exercise caution and do not leave children unattended with the bag.)

The front of each bag has a letter printed from the bear to your child:

Hi Friend,

Nice to meet you! You might be wondering who I am… I’m your traveling buddy!

I don’t have a name yet, you get to choose a special name for me!

I heard that you travel between different houses. That’s what I’m here for; you can take me with you everywhere you go! I can give you comfort and support whenever you need it. We all need extra support sometimes and I’ve been told that I have magical powers - I’m excited to be your new buddy!

From now on, I will always be there for you! I look forward to the journeys we will go on together.

Love Always, Your Traveling Buddy

Research shows:

  1. "Transitional objects become attached to the ego organizers of the psyche that soothe a child’s anxieties. At bedtime, when a child is falling asleep and his or her mother is not present in the room, the transitional object relieves the child of anxiety because it reminds him or her of the constant or integrative emotional presence of the absent mother. By alleviating perceived threats to the child’s ego control during this time, transitional phenomena provide a necessary and unique bridge between the inner and the outer worlds, and between reality and fantasy."

  1. "In the conventional definition, transitional objects are “transitional” in that they are among the tools that many children use to gradually establish autonomy and self-regulation. They are, in this sense, the manifest evidence of the process of internalization; that is, the healthy child’s effort to shift the security experienced in the care of his or her parents into himself or herself. Whereas the infant cannot calm without a caregiver’s sensitive and responsive intervention, transitional objects make that intervention portable and immediate. Why wait for mother to respond to a cry if Fluffy the stuffed animal is right there offering familiar warmth and comfort? Transitional objects are thus a first step toward developing the ability to regulate and manage one’s own emotional experiences.

Transitional objects are more broadly transitional in the sense that they help the child to bridge the transition between caring experiences. They enable a needy or distressed or regressed child to manage the gap between direct caregiving experiences. That could mean helping a 3-year-old tolerate falling asleep on her own in the family’s new apartment, a 5-year-old to manage the shift from one parent’s care into the care of another, or a 12-year-old to walk in the door of his new classroom."
